Pollution at its max in a near by well

Pollution at its max in a near by well

We people of Kureepuzha are legally fighting the illegal and unlawful open dumping of all sort of waste to the beautiful banks of RAMSOR accredited Ashtamudi Lakes and thickly populated area.

Here in Kureepuzha, Waste is dumped on the Banks of the accredited RamSir Site “Ashtamudi lake”. This is polluting the lake and the protection of the wetlands is questioned in High court as well as in Human rights commission.
Pollution at its max in the Lake

The Samara samathi formed here never goes for any publicity. In fact Authorities have refrained themselves from dumping waste to the said premises since May. Protestors have always abided by the regulations and order of the Hon. High Court. The dumping of the waste is stopped as the authorities failed to:

1)      Bring in segregated waste as per court order.

2)      Take in the sentiments of the worshippers, The leachate flows directly to the temple well and people demanded to stop this

The Last bit of Kandal Forest available near to the dumping site.

The Kollam corporation with ulterior motive and for corruption ,selected such a  beatuiful  place for the proposed garbage plant & dumping yard .Their selection was absolutly wrong and against all  Laws in connection with Solid Waste Management Rules .In addition to the above they are deliberately violated the Coastal Zone Regulation Actt, Bio-Diversity Act, Pollution Controle Act etc.

Coastal Zone Management Dept issued Notices to the corporation & KSUDP saying that Not to dumping any waste or construct anything with in hundred meters of the coastal area as per CRZ Rule. The Notice issued many times and instructed to remove all the waste already dumped in the CRZ area.

Kerala Pollution control board specifically stated that corporation authorities ignoring the pollution control boards directions or succession in the area.

Travancore Devasom board Commissioner issued notice to the District Collector to stop the illegal dumping of waste nearby the temple and also instructed to clear dumped waste from the temple premises.

The Kollam corporation authorities continued their arrogance in ignoring all such statutory notices.

The Affected inhabitance of the area  continued  agitation and litigation process against such illegal & unlawful act of the authorities for the last one and half  years .As a result of the above litigation process, the Hon' ble High court of kerala  prima facia observed that the kollam corporation   illegally dumping  the waste  in the area. This process affected the life of the inhabitance and also the caused serious environmental imbalances.

On the basis of the above assessment-  on 5th july 2012 , the Hon'ble High court passed an order for constituting  a Judicial commission headed by District Judge Kollam, Dist. Collector, Central Pollution Dept  Head, kerala state Pollution controle board offcier, Suchitwa Mission , Corporation Secretary etc  as  members to assess the grievances of the local people  and also to  check with environmental issue to the affected ashtamudi lake. The court directed  the commission to submit the report within three months timeframe.

Last week the samarasamadhi got a big relief, For the petition filed in the Human Rights commission against the dumping of waste and polluting the river; The Human Rights commission has advised not to dump waste in the banks of the lake as the commission found that the dumping of the waste is polluting the lake and is in the proximity of thickly populated surroundings.

On contrary to what is happening in Villapila shalla in Trivandrum, for Kureepuzha in Kollam where the waste dumping yard is present, things are completely different.

Here in Kureepuzha the fight is legally and there is less agitation or protests.

People here hopes that the Dumping yard will be closed down for ever and save the people, temples, ponds, lakes and churches nearby.
